July 2026 Flood Update

Dear Clergy & People of West Texas,

Grace to you and Peace.  As you know, last week parts of the Diocese of West Texas received record rainfalls in a short amount of time which caused major flooding in several of our communities.  Some counties, in particular those north and west of San Antonio, received 20 – 30 inches of rain causing flooding in Kerrville, Center Point, Boerne, Comfort, Uvalde, Sonora and several other towns.  The situation is still developing as high waters continue to travel downriver toward border communities and the Gulf.

Many of you have asked about Camp Capers on the Guadalupe River.  Programs at Camp Capers continued without interruption throughout last week.  No facilities were in danger of flooding, and the staff did an outstanding job adjusting programs to the rainy weather and following all safety and communication protocols.  Despite the rain, our Junior High campers experienced the loving power of God and the joy of fellowship during the session, and a new session commenced this week.

Members of the diocesan staff and I have been in communication with clergy and lay leaders in the communities impacted by flooding.  Our congregations are mobilizing to respond to the variety of needs in their communities, in coordination with other local churches and agencies.  We have also been in contact with Episcopal Relief and Development which has approved an initial grant to help meet immediate needs which vary from place to place.

There are many people who are out of their homes and businesses.  In Uvalde alone, 300-500 people have had their homes flooded.  I know that many of you want to help in some tangible way.  Our faith in Jesus compels our hearts to respond.  Many communities are still assessing their needs as this situation unfolds.  At this time, none of our congregations are collecting items like clothing, toys or cleaning supplies.  Please do not send them.  There may come a time for that, and we will let you know.    

The greatest needs now are prayers and financial contributions.  I know many of you said prayers last Sunday when you gathered and they are deeply appreciated.  Even though the rain has stopped, please continue to pray without ceasing for those who have lost so much in so many of our communities.  Financial contributions may be made to the Diocese of West Texas. Funds will be distributed throughout the region as needs are identified.

One of the great lessons our diocese learned following the July 4 flood last year is the power of our prayers and the strength we have when we come together as the Body of Christ in West Texas.  It is time to once again join our hands together in prayer, support and love for one another across West Texas, in the sure and certain knowledge that the God of Hope is with us always.
