About

Nestled amidst beauty, Founded on fun, Rooted in faith

The Diocese of West Texas is blessed with three camping and retreat facilities: Camp Capers in the Texas Hill Country, Mustang Island Conference along the Texas Gulf Coast, and Duncan Park in the Colorado Rocky Mountains. The diocesan camping program is dedicated to bringing children and young people of all ages and backgrounds to Jesus Christ so they may reach into the world in his name. Each facility also serves adults of all ages through various spiritual retreats and conferences. The program is flourishing with tremendous support from across the diocese, leading to new construction and new programs.

The vision of the Episcopal Diocese of West Texas Camps and Conference Centers is to remain a premier provider of experiences in the outdoors, grounded in the Christian faith and Episcopal tradition, where children, youth, and adults work, play, and grow together as they develop a community of trust, openness, and sharing.

Camp Capers

Camp Capers is a riverside camp and conference center, nestled on 188 acres in the Texas Hill Country, 40 miles northwest of San Antonio on the banks of the Guadalupe River. Camp Capers offers summer camp programming for youth 8 to 18 years of age, and attend sessions within age groups. Sessions activities include kayaking, team building challenges, a high ropes course, crafts, Bible based teaching and devotional times, and more. Through God’s grace, Camp Capers is committed to offering fun, life-changing experiences to children and youth in a safe, Christian community.

Mustang Island Conference Center

Mustang Island Conference Center is a seaside retreat center on 22 acres between Corpus Christi Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. The conference center provides a sacred place that offers our guests rest, reflection, and renewal surrounded by God’s coastal creation. Mustang Island Family Camp sessions take place in the summer, beginning on Thursday afternoons and concluding with Sunday Worship and lunch. As a family, enjoy swimming, sand castle building, surfing, arts and crafts, family-style meals, beach games, campfire on the beach, worship, biblically based teaching, and much more. The conference center is also open year-round, and serves all God’s children as a ministry of Christian hospitality to all.

Duncan Park

Duncan Park is a mountaintop get away, located 20 miles west of Boulder, Colorado. This alpine jewel captures the rugged beauty of the surrounding mountains and allows for a true respite from the hustle and bustle of modern life, existing completely off-the-grid with solar panels for electricity, no cell phone service, and drinking water drawn from its own well. Duncan Park offers summer camp sessions for junior high, high school, college students and adults, plus several Family Camp sessions, and hosts retreat weekends for churches, family reunions, and other groups.

Give

Each year, approximately one-third of all camper families rely on partial or full scholarships in order to participate in this vibrant ministry of our diocese. Help Camps & Conferences make sure that no child or family misses out on the amazing experiences of Christian community and God’s love found at camp.

Camp Sunday is an annual opportunity to celebrate and be thankful for the shared ministry of our congregations and our diocesan camping program, while encouraging others to sign up for a summer camping session. It’s also an opportunity for people to give financially so the monetary obligations of camp never hinder participation. Click here for Camp Sunday information and liturgy resources.

St. Francis Chapel Dedication

August 2, 2024 10:00 AM
Starts:
Ends:
August 2, 2024 12:00 PM

Join us as we gather to celebrate the dedication of the renovated St. Francis Chapel at Camp Capers on August 2 at 10:00 a.m. If you are unable to attend the dedication you are welcome to visit the St. Francis Chapel for the closing day for the 2024 season during Intermediate Camp B on August 10.

The renovations of the sacred St. Francis Chapel at Camp Capers are beautifully and painstakingly and thankfully, coming to an end. From the beginning the Rt. Rev's. Reed and Read, our architects, and those of us responsible for the design of the new chapel were insistent that the look and feel of the original chapel remained intact. The builder, completely on board, let us know that duplicating the original masonry takes time and real craftsmanship. Watching the artisans work has been absolutely amazing, and helped us realize that worshiping in the chapel during summer camp will not happen until the very end of this season - but well worth the wait.
