Diocese of West Texas Represented at UN Commission on the Status of Women

DWTX Goes to the United Nations

Each year the Episcopal Church sends a delegation of nine people, each representing one of the nine provinces of our Church, to the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (UNCSW). UNCSW is the largest conference on women's rights in the world and takes place at the United Nations headquarters in New York City.

In 2020, Presiding Bishop Michael Curry chose Tatiana Hoecker, member of St. Francis by the Lake Episcopal Church in Canyon Lake, as the Province VII delegate to attend UNCSW! This was an exciting moment for the Episcopal Diocese of West Texas as Tatiana is the first person to be selected for this role from our diocese. However, as with many gatherings in 2020, the conference scheduled for March 2020 never occurred due to the pandemic and was postponed indefinitely.

The United Nations has decided to continue forward in 2021 with UNCSW 65 and hold all events virtually. Since the Episcopal delegation was not able to attend the conference last year, the Presiding Bishop and the leadership team at The Episcopal Church have asked the 2020 delegation to stay on for this year’s conference. This means that Tatiana will remain the diocesan and Province VII delegate for UNCSW 65, happening March 15-26, 2021 online.

With a bachelor’s degree in International Relations and a master’s degree in International Development, Tatiana has studied and researched the United Nations for the past 10 years and is incredibly honored and excited about this opportunity. As a delegate, she will represent The Episcopal Church, attending all UNCSW sessions and all Ecumenical Women and Anglican Communion events.

If you would like to learn more and follow Tatiana’s UNCSW journey, you can read Tatiana’s blog, DWTX Goes to the United Nations, or contact her directly at tatianahoecker2@gmail.com. She is available to meet, preach, or Zoom with your congregation or group and share her experience at UNCSW 65. Please feel free to email her to discuss any ideas you may have.
