Churches within the Diocese of West Texas are rich in history, with deep roots entrenched in their communities and reflective of the missional spirit of clergy and lay who persevered with faith and love to build a sacred space for worship, sharing the Word and love of God. Trinity Episcopal Church in Pharr, Texas is one such example. The first gathering of its congregants took place in June,1925. With the construction of the church that followed shortly thereafter, Trinity became the first Episcopal Church to be erected in Hidalgo County. The church has been an important part of the Pharr community since its inception and remains a hospitable and welcoming congregation.
In May 2025 the church faced a challenge when a series of acts of vandalism culminated in significant damage to almost half of its stained-glass windows. Heartbroken but not deterred, Trinity's vestry began working in cooperation with the Diocese and Church Insurance, to undertake the process to complete significant restoration of the windows. While it took almost one year, in May of this year, the restoration was complete revealing the stunning windows that have been restored to their original splendor. Sunlight now shines brightly and colorfully through the windows, reflecting the original colors of the glass.
The Rev. Sharon Alexander, Rector of Trinity Pharr and St. Matthew’s in Edinburg is grateful that the work on the windows has been completed before celebrating the church's 100th anniversary in the fall. She shared, “The restoration was well worth the wait. We are thankful for the intricate work and care that was taken in the restitution of the windows which will keep them in healthy condition for future generations. I am lifted by the lovely views. From the outside, the trees and neighboring houses reflect beautifully in the windows. During the Eucharist, the sunlight brings rainbows that dance across the altar through a triangular window”.
