History and Mission
TMI Episcopal, the flagship school of the Diocese of West Texas, is the oldest Episcopal church-sponsored, college-preparatory school in the Southwest, educating students in grades 6-12. Dating back to 1893, TMI was founded by the Rt. Rev. James Steptoe Johnston, the second bishop of the territory in the Episcopal Diocese of West Texas. Originally established as the West Texas Military School for Boys, the school was created to develop young men of faith, intellect, and integrity, with a strong foundation in military leadership. For much of the 20th century, TMI operated as a respected military boarding school, gaining national recognition for its academic rigor and leadership formation.
Over the decades, TMI evolved to meet the needs of a changing world. In 1972, the school welcomed its first female students, becoming coeducational. The military program transitioned to optional participation and was eventually retired, making way for broader leadership development programs that reflect today’s best practices. In 1989, TMI moved from its downtown San Antonio location to a new 80-acre hilltop campus on the city’s northwest side—an inspiring setting that continues to shape our vibrant learning community.

Growth and Renewal
TMI Episcopal opened the 2025-2026 school year with a record-breaking enrollment of 640 students - a perfect time for TMI Episcopal to embrace the theme “All Things Made New.” This theme reflects not only the physical transformation of the TMI campus but also the spirit of renewal—a commitment to growth, innovation, and faith in what lies ahead.
The school year started with the highly anticipated opening of Harthan Hall and Coates Science Hall, new academic buildings (connected to one another) that introduce modern classrooms and additional collaborative spaces designed to elevate teaching, learning, and student engagement. Frost Athletic Center also received an exciting refresh, featuring updated Panther branding throughout the facility.
One of the most anticipated changes took place in the Refectory, where walls were removed to significantly expand the serving area, creating a more open and efficient dining experience for students.
Across campus, several spaces were reimagined to support a more collegiate, student-centered environment. The café relocated to a larger space, the spirit store moved into the café’s former location, and the Art Annex transitioned to the Walker Innovation Center, aligning perfectly with the recent merger of the Art and Innovation departments.
TMI also introduced an entirely new student hub: the B.E.N. Center, a dedicated space for students to gather, collaborate, and enjoy recreational activities.
An additional project is underway adjacent to the Elliott-Stabler Leadership Center: Eagle Plaza, an outdoor amphitheater-style space set to open in spring 2026. Eagle Plaza will serve as the new location for cadet formation as well as an additional gathering spot for school events and community activities.
