St. Andrew’s by the in Sea Port Isabel Celebrates 70 Years
Seventy years ago, the number 2 hit record was Rock Around the Clock, by Bill Haley and the Comets. Jonas Salk introduced the polio vaccine, and a sticky fabric named velcro received its patent. Way down in South Texas, on October 16, a group of Port Isabel residents gathered to pray. And something miraculous happened; it did not make the headlines or the hit parade, but over the years it has given people a whole new kind of life. St. Andrew’s by the Sea was born from that little meeting, and the congregation celebrated it all this year culminating with a party on November 22nd.
“St. Andrew’s has touched many lives over the years,” Pastor Claudia, Rector at St. Andrew’s said. “It has a history of creating small things that outgrow it and out-live it. Two examples are the WoWE, Winter Outdoor Wildlife Expo that became an annual event, now run by the South Padre Island Birding Center, and English as a Second Language, a burgeoning ministry to our neighbors. However, what mostly blossoms from this little church is the Gospel of the grace of Jesus Christ, which touches both local people and visitors from around the country. We are a small church with a big reach - and that is something worth celebrating.”
