‍20th ANNUAL BISHOP'S GOLF CLASSIC

On Monday, November 3, golfers from across the Diocese of West Texas will gather for a day of fellowship, fun, and golfing that supports the Diocesan Camp Scholarship Fund, established to help send children and families to diocesan camps.

On November 13, 2006, the Diocese of West Texas held its first Bishop’s Annual Golf Classic.  The Rt. Rev. Gary Lillibridge, D.D., 9^th Bishop of West Texas, brought together golfers around the diocese for the first of what is now a highly anticipated annual event.  

Looking back on the beginnings of the tournament up to this year’s 20^th anniversary Bishop Lillibridge shared, “I am so delighted that the Bishop's Golf Classic is turning 20 this year.  When I began the tournament, with great help from many people, including Mike Horridge who volunteered to chair it in the early years, we were hoping that this would be a major boost to the scholarship fund for the diocesan camping program.  We had no idea of its enormous reach over the years, and I am so grateful to those who play and those who work to make it happen each year.  Like virtually everything in the Christian endeavor, it is better when shared with others.  Happy 20th anniversary!”

Since that first tournament, participation has grown, and the number of scholarships awarded has multiplied significantly. In 2024, the event set a record, raising more than $60,000 to help send children and families to one of the three diocesan camps, Camp Capers, Mustang Island Conference Center, and Duncan Park. Scholarship recipients are in communities across the diocese. Additionally, scholarships are awarded to veterans and their families, and children from the Good Samaritan Community Services, St. Jude Ranch for abused and neglected children, the Magdelana House and Transformation House.

The Rt. Rev. Dr. David G. Read, D.D., Bishop of West Texas, stated, “We were thrilled to see the turnout in 2024 and are grateful for the funds raised for the Camp Scholarship Fund. Because of the generosity of golfers and sponsors over the years, many children and families have experienced the joy of camp at one of our camp facilities. I’m thankful to Bishop Lillibridge, Mike Horridge, and those who brought the tournament to life and for the great legacy of an event that continues to grow and bring more campers to our diocese. We are excited to celebrate 20 years!”

This year’s event will feature special raffle prizes and auction items to commemorate the 20-year milestone, as well as traditional games such as Beat the Bishop, Longest Drive, and Closest to the Pin.
