Hispanic Heritage Month
Hispanic Heritage Month is a month-long celebration of Hispanic and Latino history and culture. Celebrated annually from September 15 to October 15, it is a time to recognize the many contributions made by Latinos to the history and culture of the United States, Texas, and the Diocese of West Texas. The Latino presence in Texas dates back centuries as a part of both Spanish and Méxican territory before declaring its independence in 1836. Hispanic Heritage Month is an opportunity to highlight the unique voices and experiences of Hispanic/Latino Americans and celebrate their history and achievements within our diocese.
The Episcopal Church
On the Eighth Day of the 1970 General Convention held in Houston, Texas, the Bishop Coadjutor of New York for the Committee on Social and International Affairs introduced Resolutions that led to the formation of a National Commission on Hispanic Affairs that would evolve into the current Office of Latino/Hispanic Ministries.
Earlier this year the Rt. Rev. Dr. David G. Read, D.D., Bishop of the Diocese of West Texas formed the new Latino + Immigration Ministries, led by Flor Saldivar, Director of Latino + Immigration Ministries. "For the first time, the Diocese of West Texas has a staff member dedicated to leading and resourcing our clergy and congregations to engage in this work," said the Rt. Rev. Dr. David G. Read, D.D. Bishop of the Diocese of West Texas.
Flor will work closely with the Rt. Rev. Angela Maria Cortiñas, Bishop Suffragan of the Diocese of West Texas as they work to build cultural and language competency within the diocese. "We hope to be able to create spaces for churches to share resources, talk about what their successes and challenges are, to network and to see what other churches in our diocese are doing," Bishop Cortiñas said.

Todos: Abrámonos a la presencia de Dios que obra en nosotros, entre nosotros y a través de nosotros.
