Feast of Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz - April 18
Join St. Paul’s, San Antonio and the diocesan Latino + Immigration Ministries on Saturday, April 18 at 5:00 p.m. as we celebrate the Feast of Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz. Following the bilingual Eucharist, join us in the parish hall for a light reception and small exhibit featuring works by Sor Juana Inés and the generations of artists she inspired in art, literature, and music. Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz was a writer, poet, nun, and scholar in 17th century Mexico. She was considered one of the greatest lyric poets of her time (male or female), in an era where the church discouraged women from learning to read and write. She was a vocal advocate for women’s rights to an education, and openly criticized the church stating that God would not give women intellect if he did not want them to use it. Her works are considered among the most important in the Americas and went on to inspire thousands of women and Latinos across the globe. Today, Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz is the only Latina celebrated in the Episcopal Church calendar.
