Save the Date for Camp Capers' 75th Anniversary Celebration

[Waring, TX] The Rt. Rev. David Reed, in collaboration with Camps & Conferences staff and a committee of volunteers, will host a weekend of festivities at Camp Capers in celebration of its 75th Anniversary next year. The celebration will be held at Camp Capers in Waring, Texas Friday, October 7th to Sunday, October 9th, 2022, with overnight accommodations and single-day opportunities for participants.

2022 marks Camp Capers' seventy-fifth year as a camping ministry of the Episcopal Diocese of West Texas, following its establishment in 1947. Since the start, Camp Capers has been a blessing because of a blessing, when the Steves family donated land alongside the Guadalupe River to the diocese as a thank offering for the safe return of their son, who went missing in action in WWII. Since then, Camp Capers has flourished, and now serves over 1,000 campers every summer. New facilities, including two lodges, activities building, dining hall, and new cabins, have enabled Camp Capers to diversify its ministry, offering programs and retreats all year long. In 2015, the diocese purchased 108 acres adjacent to Camp Capers, more than doubling its size and creating wonderful opportunities for hill country campsites, trails to explore, and even more river to kayak and float.

Led by Shannon Gill and Marnie Brown, the 75th Anniversary Planning Committee will plan and host a weekend program open to all Camp Capers alumni, retreat participants, parents, supporters, former staff, and their families. Activities will include celebratory festivities like storytelling and campus tours, as well as traditional camp activities like kayaking, dancing, and Arts & Crafts.

Marnie Brown, Co-Chair, shares "The Camp Capers 75th Anniversary Celebration will be a time for former campers, staff, and anyone who has shared or wants to share in the magic of this blessings-filled place to reconnect, rejuvenate, and build a Christ-centered community together. For me, Camp Capers has always been a place for fun, camaraderie, and connecting with God...a place to be whimsical, sentimental, musical, and non-sensical. I am counting the days until I can pass through the camp gates again to reconnect with old friends and to meet new ones. I hope to see you there!"

Registration for the celebration weekend will open online in April 2022, at dwtx.org/events. The cost will be determined as more details are confirmed, and scholarships will be available.

Please share this celebration opportunity amongst your network affiliated with Camp Capers. Questions may be directed to Marnie Brown at mobrown6@yahoo.com or Shannon Gill at shannongymdiva@yahoo.com.
