Did You Know?: Bishops Play a Role in the Worldwide Anglican Communion

Did You Know?

An Education & Communication Series from the Bishop Nominating Committee*

From the earliest days of the Church, persons deemed worthy of leadership positions were chosen to assist the Apostles and their successors in passing on the faith to new generations. These men and women served as chief shepherds of the Christian community, chief teachers, and guardians of church unity. Hence, Episcopalians value Bishops, because they govern church affairs according to the norms and traditions inaugurated by Christ.

Today, Bishops have a wide range of responsibilities, including defending the integrity of the faith, confirming and receiving new members, ordaining and providing pastoral care for priests and deacons in their charge, providing community leadership, administering the business affairs of their dioceses, and participating in the affairs of the national and worldwide Anglican communion.

For these reasons, please continue to pray for the Diocese, the Bishop’s Nominating Committee*, the Bishop nominees, and for your own discernment.

Almighty God, giver of all good gifts, you have called us to a life-giving fellowship in the Diocese of West Texas: Encourage and build up in us the love of Christ Jesus that we might continue to strengthen the legacy of those who have tended and led this diocese with godly courage; look graciously upon us and on your whole Church; by your Spirit, guide the Standing Committee, the delegates, and the clergy who shall discern the one you call to be a bishop for our diocese; send us a faithful shepherd who will care for your people and equip us for our ministries. All this we pray in the name of Jesus Christ, who with you and the Holy Spirit, lives and reigns now and forever. Amen.

Nominations will not be accepted after the October 10 deadline.
