College Missions Grant in Action: St. Matthew's, Edinburg

In November 2022, St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church in Edinburg utilized grant funds awarded by the College Missions Council (CMC) to host their first event for college students and young adults. Using stencils, markers, and wood-burning pens, the students made breadboards and crosses bearing words of comfort and fall imagery. As part of a community outreach ministry, these handmade gifts were delivered to families in need for Thanksgiving, along with turkeys, bread, canned food, and dessert.

The event was a success, not only providing assistance to families during a stressful season, but also creating a community for students and young adults to love God, love each other, and to serve His people. Already, this group of students is planning to meet again and reflect Christ during their time together. Ideas for future gatherings include making scarves and Christmas cards for the elderly while enjoying hot cocoa and a movie. And there will certainly be more gatherings in the Spring Semester.

If you would like to create or continue a community of students and young adults at your parish, consider applying for a grant from the College Missions Council. The Diocese of West Texas College Missions Council supports ministries of, to, and with young adults (ages 18-30) both on and off college campuses. Grants of up to $5,000 are available to support young adult and campus ministries. The CMC is accepting proposals from parishes on a monthly basis; proposals should envision ministry for and with young adults in the diocese. Grant recipients may reapply as needed, and as grants are available, in the same fiscal year. Interested congregations may send proposals to the Rev. Kevin Schubert, CMC Chair, and the committee will be responsible for allocating grant monies and coordinating college ministry efforts. Click here to save the application form.
