Tammie Shelton, Director of Family Camps atMustang Island Conference Center Announces Retirement

Families around the diocese look forward each year to attending Family Camp at Mustang Island Conference Center (MICC). When they arrive, they are welcomed and hosted throughout the week by beloved Family Camp Director, Tammie Shelton.

Joining the staff at MICC in February of 2023, Tammie has been instrumental in creating a camping experience that incorporates spiritual nurturing, worship, fun, connections, and time for families to enjoy time for rest and relaxation.

Announcing her retirement to be effective September 16th, Tammie will now be taking time to focus on her family. Tammie shared her journey to becoming Family Camp Director. “I love Mustang Island Conference Center! - not only do I cherish the time I have spent as Family Camp Director, but all of my history with my island home - starting as Jerry Fischer's secretary when he first gifted the land, to my wedding, to being a candidate at MICC's first Cursillo, to multiple volunteer workdays throughout the years, to donating toward the beautiful Chapel of the Holy Family.” She continued, “MICC has been a special part of my life, and I feel blessed to complete a full-circle and finish out my work-life there. Being Family Camp Director for the last four seasons has been sometimes exhausting, mostly fun, and always a gift. I treasure the memories. I am honored to have served God's special families with the amazing staff during my time at MICC ,and they all hold a special place in my heart. I look forward to continuing to serve them all as a volunteer. “

The Rt. Rev. Dr. David G. Read, Bishop of West Texas shared, “Mustang Island Conference Center has been blessed to have Tammie leading our Family Camp program.
