Bowden hymn at General Convention

At Diocesan Council in February, delegates voted on a resolution to send a hymn in honor of Dr. Artemisia Bowden forth to the 79th General Convention of the Episcopal Church for inclusion in the hymnody of the church. The hymn, with lyrics written by the Rev. Tony Regist and music composed by George Martinez and Eric J. Schmidt, did not make it past the House of Bishops at General Convention and was given a final status of "no further action."

Unfortunately, at this General Convention, there was no path for the hymn to follow, as a revision of the 1982 Hymnal is not being presently considered. There are other processes in place to bring the resolution back to the 80th General Convention of the Episcopal Church, to be held in 2021, and those will be further researched.

"I remain so grateful to our Artemisia Bowden Chapter of the Union of Black Episcopalians for their hard work on this hymn and also for their unwavering support of honoring Dr. Bowden in our diocese and the church at large," said Bishop David Reed.
