Welcome to St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, a historic congregation in the heart of Kenedy, Texas.
For more than a century, St. Matthew’s has been a place of worship, prayer, fellowship, and Christian community. We cherish our rich history while continuing to welcome new faces and share God’s love with our neighbors.
Whether you are a lifelong Episcopalian, new to the area, exploring your faith, or simply looking for a church home, we invite you to join us.
The story of St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church begins in 1899, when a small group of Episcopal worshippers began gathering for services in the local Methodist church.
As the congregation grew, St. Matthew’s was formally organized as an Episcopal mission in 1913 under the leadership of the Rev. Alfred R. S. Garden.
In 1916, the congregation celebrated the completion of its church building, designed by architect Frank Corby in the Gothic Revival style. The building’s distinctive architecture, including its pointed-arch windows and traditional design, made it a lasting landmark in the Kenedy community.
The church endured a significant hurricane in 1942, which damaged its original tower. The tower was subsequently rebuilt, allowing the historic building to continue serving its congregation.
In 1956, St. Matthew’s achieved parish status, marking an important milestone in the life of the congregation.
In recognition of its architectural and historical significance, the church building was designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1986.
Today, St. Matthew’s honors the faith and dedication of the generations who came before us while continuing its mission of worship, fellowship, and service.
We would love to welcome you to St. Matthew’s!
