Summer Camp

Camp Capers Summer Camp program offers the opportunity for approximately 2000 campers from 8 -18 years of age to experience the unconditional love and friendship of a Christian community through each of our one-week sessions.  Through God’s grace, Camp Capers is committed to offering fun, life-changing experiences to children and youth in a safe, Christ-centered community.  Leadership at camp is provided by paid staff and volunteer counselors who go through a rigorous selection process including background and reference checks, and face-to-face interviews. Paid staff must also attend a week long training session before camp begins. Each session is guided by deans, chaplains, and teachers who are clergy and lay leaders from the Diocese of West Texas.  We seek to provide opportunities for young people to encounter transforming relationships with Jesus Christ.  Every camper and staff member is nurtured and cared for as a valued member of the Body of Christ.

Brian Kates, Program Director for Camp Capers

This fall, Brian and Sarah KatesI started my “new” journey as the first Camp Capers Program Director for the diocese.  So far, this has been everything I could have dreamed, and more.  What an exciting time it is to be working in Camps and Conferences.  This past summer we had the most campers come through our gates than ever before.  We had one of the most amazing staffs come together from all over the state to serve together for three months.  It was the people that I worked with this summer that made coming back easy.   To read more of Brian's article, please click here.

My name is Emily Vandewalle and I have the incredible privilege to be the Staff Director for Camp Capers in 2012. Currently, I am in my last semester as a senior at Texas A&M University studying Environmental Geosciences.

Though my summers were not spent at Camp Capers when I was growing up, they were spent in the backyards of my childhood neighborhood in San Antonio, culminating my love for the outdoors and for community. As you can probably guess, it didn’t take long for me to fall in love with the environment and mission of Camp Capers when I served as a counselor in the summer of 2010.  To read more of Emily's article, please click here.
