Stewardship - Empowering Congregations

 Stwardship LogoEmpowering Congregations
Presented by the Episcopal Church Foundation

Date: Sat. Nov. 20, 2010
Time: 11:30 am - 2:30 pm
Location: Bishop Jones Center
Cost: $10 for lunch

The Stewardship Department will host two professionals from the Episcopal Church Foundation (ECF) for a three-hour mini-conference Saturday November 20, 2010 from 11:30 am - 2:30 pm in the Mission Room of Chapel House at the Bishop Jones Center.

Whether or not your congregation is currently considering a capital campaign, this is a perfect opportunity to learn the basics and see the organizational similarities to annual giving campaigns. ECF has helped Episcopal congregations, dioceses, and other communities of faith around the country raise millions of dollars for property, program, endowment, debt retirement, and outreach. The Discern-Study-Ask methodology has a proven track record of success. And ultimately, successful campaigns instill, foster and reinforce a culture of philanthropy in which the concepts of giving, asking, sharing and gratitude permeate the life of an institution.

Funding Future Ministry ManualPlanned gifts, gifts made through bequests in wills or through life-income gifts, hold enormous potential for Episcopal communities of faith. Establishing and maintaining an active planned giving program is a vital ministry that offers church members the opportunity to make a final testament about the importance of their Christian faith, and can help ensure resources will be available in the future to do the important work of the Church. Each congregation with attendees will receive a complimentary copy ($35 value) of Funding Future Ministry: A Guide to Planned Giving produced by the Episcopal Church Foundation.  This newly revised, updated, and comprehensive manual ensures that clergy and lay leaders know the most effective ways to encourage legacy gifts, all set in a theological framework.

Basics of the Parish Capital Campaign

A step-by-step understanding of the three phases: Discernment, Feasibility Study, and the Gifting Phase. There is only one type of parish or school capital campaign to undertake -- a successful one. This time-tested methodology has led hundreds of Episcopal parishes and schools to successful efforts. Learn how to prepare for and execute a campaign for your church and school.

Presented by Maurice J. Seaton the Senior Program Director of Capital Campaign Services at the Episcopal Church Foundation. In this role Maurice manages a team of eleven consultants who provide capital campaign management services to Episcopal churches, schools and other Episcopal organizations of all sizes. He has served as an annual stewardship, planned giving and capital campaign consultant to a number of Episcopal churches and emphasizes the importance of integrating a spiritual dimension into raising funds.

Born in South Africa, Maurice is a lifelong Episcopalian and a member of Church of the Ascension in New York City where he chairs their planned giving committee. Prior to joining the Foundation in 2002, Maurice served as a diplomat to the United Nations. He holds a Masters degree in Public Administration from New York University and is a member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP).

Setting Up a Planned Giving Program for Your Parish

Take the mystery out of planned giving for your parish. Learn in easy-to-understand terms how planned giving differs from annual stewardship and capital campaigns, and how your parish can build endowment through wills and life-income gifts. After a review of the planned giving instruments, you will learn about the importance of a parish vision, protecting and growing your endowment, and how to invite others to remember your parish through estate and financial planning. You will leave the workshop with a plan of action.

Presented by James W. N. Murphy the Senior Program Director of Stewardship Services at the Episcopal Church Foundation. Jim oversees ECF's planned giving and endowment management work, leading workshops and working with parishes, dioceses, and other Episcopal organizations to assist them to enhance and develop their programs. He also supervises ECF's work in Annual Stewardship/Giving and Development Solutions.

Prior to joining ECF in 2008, Jim was Director of the Master of Arts Program and Program Manager for Lifelong Learning & the Center for Christian Spirituality at the General Theological Seminary. For more than 16 years he worked for a major international law firm in NYC, serving in a number of financial management roles. He has been an active volunteer leader in stewardship, parish administration, and Christian formation ministries in several Episcopal parishes in New York and New Jersey.

A native of Lansing, MI, Jim holds a Certificate in Fundraising from New York University's School of Continuing and Professional Studies, an MA in Christian Spirituality from the General Theological Seminary, and a BS from NYU's Stern School of Business, and is a member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP).
