Diocese of West Texas Honored Woman

The Commission for Women's Ministries (C4WM) and the Diocese of West Texas invite each church in the diocese to choose an honored woman (or women) within your congregation. A luncheon will be held at Camp Capers during the Fall Women's Gathering in October 2017 for all the women chosen in their congregations.

c4wm_logo_primary.jpgOne woman from all of the nominated women will be selected to represent the diocese at the National Episcopal Church Women (ECW) Triennial Convention in the summer of 2018 in Austin, Texas. Triennial is held every three years at the same time as the Episcopal Church's General Convention, the official governing body of the Episcopal Church. The tradition of recognizing an honored woman from each diocese was established by the National Episcopal Women's History Project.

Nominations of women from within your congregation will be accepted beginning at the Fall Women's Gathering in October of this year, to be held October 14-16 at Camp Capers. They will be received until the Spring Women's Gathering in April 2017. A "Most Honored Celebration" will be held at the Fall Women's Gathering in October 2017 where the drawing of "our most honored woman" will take place.

blossoms_13534bc.jpg"If we continue to grow and prosper, it is important to recognize the women who came before us, the woman/women in whose footsteps we followed and continue to emulate today. Not only were their steps important, but our steps, the very steps we take today are being seen, modeled, and recorded, making us the history makers of tomorrow," said Pamela Currier, historian for the C4WM.

The process to select an Honored Woman for Triennial in 2018 began at the Spring Women's Gathering in April of this year with a "Hats Off to You" luncheon at Camp Capers, which celebrated the many hats women in the church wear: altar guild, greeters, kitchen clean-up, vestry, children's chapel, lector, potluck coordinator, Sunday school, Daughters of the King, etc.

The Diocese of West Texas has recognized and sent forth Honored Women to past Triennials. They include: Marjorie George in 2015, Ellen Martin in 2012, Betty Chumney in 2009, and Peggy Ogden Welsh in 2006. The diocese also recognizes our holy woman, Dr. Artemisia Bowden, who is now listed among the saints in "Holy Women, Holy Men: Celebrating the Saints," and her official day of commemoration is August 18 on the Episcopal Church calendar.

Stay tuned as the nominated names begin to be received and publicized in celebration of diocesan women everywhere. For more information on the Honored Woman project, contact Pam Currier at 210-481-5772 or pamcurrier2@msn.com.
